Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differing reproduction may, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could result in the development of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from textbooks for high school, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.

It is essential for science educators to advocate for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestral Archaeopteryx.
While these are troubling changes, it's important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

What is Creationism?

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this view, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes create new species that are identical to the original species.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the original species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has achieved its first victory in taking away instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next goal is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.
On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
